The closest national park to Arusha town – northern Tanzania’s safari capital – Arusha National Park is a multi-faceted jewel, often overlooked by safari goers, despite offering the opportunity to explore a beguiling diversity of habitats within a few hours. The entrance gate leads into shadowy montane forest inhabited by inquisitive blue monkeys and colourful turacos and trogons – the only place on the northern safari circuit where the acrobatic black-and-white Colobus monkey is easily seen. In the midst of the forest stands the spectacular Ngurdoto Crater, whose steep, rocky cliffs enclose a wide marshy floor dotted with herds of buffalo and warthog; Further north, rolling grassy hills enclose the tranquil beauty of the Momela Lakes, each one a different hue of green or blue. Their shallows sometimes tinged pink with thousands of flamingos, the lakes support a rich selection of resident and migrant waterfowl, and shaggy waterbucks display their large lyre-shaped horns on the watery fringes. Graceful Giraffe glide across the grassy hills, between grazing zebra herds, while pairs of wide-eyed dik-dik dart into scrubby bush like overgrown hares on spindly legs.
A long cherished wish of Africa enthusiasts came true in September 2004: The former private homes of actor Hardy Krüger and his farm manager, Jim Mallory, are at the centre of an extremely comfortable new lodge located at the edge of Arusha National Park, close to the setting of the legendary movie "HATARI!" and overlooking the world famous Mount Kilimanjaro and its neighbouring dormant volcano, Mount Meru. The sun disappeared behind Mt. Meru... The snows of Kilimanjaro reflected in the dark mirror of its smooth surface. Happy who may live her. Live!. In the real sense of the word. (Translated from the novel: “Meine Farm in Afrika” by Hardy Krüger; Lübbe Publications.)
Joerg & Marlies Gabriel and their team will welcome not only guests with nostalgia for Hollywood, but also enthusiastic safari romantics and explorers to their new home "HATARI LODGE!"
Arusha (Tanzania’s second largest city) is located in northern Tanzania surrounded by some of Africa's most famous landscapes and national parks. Beautifully situated below Mount Meru on the eastern edge of the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley, it has a pleasant climate and is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as having its own Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. The region is a popular tourist destination and is the centre of the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit. The Rift Valley cuts through the middle of the region north-to-south; Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of God in Maasai language) is an active volcano to the north of Ngorongoro. Altitudes throughout the region vary widely, but much of it ranges from 900 to 1600 metres (3,000 to 5,500 feet in elevation). Mt. Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro, peaks at 4,655 metres (14,980 feet). The city of Arusha lies at the southern foot of Mt. Meru. Areas to the south and southeast of the mountain tend to be sufficiently watered and are the most densely populated areas of the region. Most people here speak Swahili and their tribal language. Many also speak English. The Maasai are the most influential tribe in the region. The Arusha and Meru people live near Mt. Meru. Rwa, Mbulu, Iraqw, Temi, and Mbugwe are also present in smaller areas. The city of Arusha is currently undergoing urbanization, which is drawing people of many tribes from throughout the country to live there.
Day 4 Arusha – Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Today, depart to Ngorongoro Conservation Area for a visit to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. The journey takes us past Lake Manyara and up onto the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The road is tarmac for some of the way to Crater Forest Tented Lodge, your base for your visit to the crater. The lodge is situated at a breathtaking spot at the foot of the Ngorongoro Crater in the middle of the Masai living area. After arrival at the lodge, time for relaxation or a walk around the camp. Overnight at Crater Forest Tented Lodge, on full board basis.
Established on a highland coffee
plantation called Kirin Coffee Estate, altitude 1,800 metres above
sea-level, the lodge occupies previously cultivated fields directly
bordering Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area. The lodge is operated
as an eco-friendly small scale lodge with 15 tented rooms, all on platforms
with magnificent views over the Ngorongoro Forest. The rooms are spacious
and all have ensuite bathrooms with hot showers and toilets. For those
chilly upland nights enjoy the warmth of your own African-style firepot.
The lodge offers optional activities like walking safari’s, mountain
biking and a visit to a Masai village or coffee plantation.
The
Ngorongoro crater is one of the world wonders. At the bottom of the
crater lives of thousands of wild animals from a wide variety, Elephants,
buffaloes huge, rare rhinos, who is still best be protected because
the surrounding crater wall which allows a permanent monitoring, lions,
wildebeests, gazelles, in short: a photographic feast for the eye.
The soda lake also houses a small colony of flamingoes. The crater
is not a national park but large part of the Ngorongoro conservation
area land belonging to the Masai communities, and the other covers
to the Serengeti. The purpose of this arrangement is a balance between
the needs of the natural inhabitants of this area and for game. Of
course, there are conflicts between the Masai cattle herds that the
hats and the predators in this area. The Masai formerly lived at the
bottom of the crater but were forced to leave this area to make room
for the game. Even the highlands surrounding the crater are certainly
worth a visit. A journey leads to End with fantastic views and strange-shaped
rock walls and slopes overlooking Lake Eyasi. Lake Eyasi is the area
of the Hadzabe and Datoga, Tanzania’s latest strain of bushes men.Day 5 Ngorongoro Crater – Serengeti National Park
Early rise for a safari to the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater. The road to the top will go through rainforest with beautiful mosses growing alongside the abundance of trees. On top the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. A narrow road winds down to the crater bottom. The game drive will be inside the crater. The crater itself contains all the major mega fauna associated with Africa in a relatively small area thus almost guaranteeing sightings of the Big 5 . A picnic lunch will be served during your full-day game drive. Towards the late afternoon we will ascend the crater for a spectacular panorama with the ebbing sun before driving onto our base for tonight, Serengeti Tented Camp in Ikoma. The location is just outside the official Serengeti borders but still with a lot of wildlife. Overnight in Serengeti Ikoma Safari Tented Camp, full board.
Set in the midst of an incredible
vista of savannah and skies, sheltered in a grove of acacia trees is
Serengeti Tented Camp. Ideally situated along the path of the
migrating wildebeest between Kenya and Tanzania, the camp is situated
at the border of the world-renowned Serengeti National Park. There
you will find yourself on probably one of the best game drives in the
area - along the western corridor of the park, taking in Kirawira and
the Grumeti river - home to the infamous wildebeest-eating giant crocodiles.
There is no better place to take in one of the world's greatest wildlife
spectacles. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom, modern furnishings
and a private verandah. The central restaurant and bar area boast a
large fireplace - an ideal spot to unwind with a drink after a long
days exciting game viewing. The large tents all have ensuite bathrooms
with shower and toilet. The restaurant is in the main building, but
very often dinner will be served underneath a sky of starsDay 6 Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti region encompasses
the Serengeti National Park itself, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area,
Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and Ikorongo Controlled Areas
and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Over 90,000 tourists
visit the Park each year. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere
Reserves have been established within the 30,000 km² region. It's unique
ecosystem has inspired writers from Ernest Hemingway to Peter Mattheissen,
filmmakers like Hugo von Lawick and Alan Root as well as numerous photographers
and scientists. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth.
The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely
changed in the past million years. Early man himself made an appearance
in Olduvai Gorge about two million years ago. Some patterns of life,
death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves.
It is the migration for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over
a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern
hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and
November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April,
May and June. So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought,
gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back. The Wildebeest
travel through a variety of parks, reserves and protected areas and
through a variety of habitat. Join us to explore the different forms
of vegetation and landscapes of the Serengeti ecosystem and meet some
of their most fascinating inhabitants.Day 7 Serengeti – Lake Manyara
Through the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area our safari continues onto the most famous site of early man, Olduvai Gorge. It was here that the famous Leakey family first uncovered our oldest known relative, Zinzanthropus Man, as he was named. There is a great lookout point here providing amazing vistas of the gorge. Time is provided to visit the small museum. After a picnic lunch a stop will be made at a Maasai village (permission and price for the visit has to be negotiated with the chief, your driver/guide will assist you with the negotiations) After the visit the tour will continue onto our base for the next part of your safari, Lake Manyara Tented Camp, close to Lake Manyara.
Lying
in a shallow depression of the Great East African Rift Valley, Lake
Manyara National Park spreads out across the valley, the alkaline
lake dominating a vast landscape. Often called Tanzania's water wonderland
due to the large number of birds and animals the lake supports, Lake
Manyara is also famous for its tree-climbing lions often to be found
dozing in the shade up in the branch of a tree - a unique phenomenon
to the area. Lake Manyara Tented camp is only a short drive from
the park entrance through Migungani Village . The camp is nestled
away in a quiet corner of 35 acres of acacia forest and A-frame style
tents are placed around a central glade, offering privacy but still
only a short walk to the restaurant and bar. The tents all have an
ensuite bathroom, mosquito nets and a private veranda.
Located
beneath the cliffs of the Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift
Valley, Lake Manyara National Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible
bird life, and breathtaking views. Located on the way to Ngorongoro
Crater and the Serengeti, Lake Manyara National Park is well worth
a stop in its own right. Its ground water forests, bush plains, baobob
strewn cliffs, and algae-streaked hot springs offer incredible ecological
variety in a small area, rich in wildlife and incredible numbers of
birds. The alkaline soda of Lake Manyara is home to an incredible array
of bird life that thrives on its brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoop
and graze by the thousands, colourful specks against the grey minerals
of the lake shore. Yellow-billed storks swoop and corkscrew on thermal
winds rising up from the escarpment, and herons flap their wings against
the sun-drenched sky. Even reluctant bird-watchers will find something
to watch and marvel at within the national park. Lake Manyara’s famous
tree-climbing lions are another reason to pay this park a visit. The
only kind of their species in the world, they make the ancient mahogany
and elegant acacias their home during the rainy season, and are a well-known
but rather rare feature of the northern park. In addition to the lions,
the national park is also home to the largest concentration of baboons
anywhere in the world; a fact that makes for interesting game viewing
of large families of the primates.Day 8 Lake Manyara – Arusha – Zanzibar, Stone Town
After a final game drive through Lake Manyara National Park followed by lunch we drive to Arusha for your domestic flight to fabled Zanzibar. Upon arrival at Zanzibar airport you will be transferred to Stone Town, location of your hotel, Swahili House. Overnight in Swahili House, bed and breakfast.
Day 9 Zanzibar, Stone Town
After breakfast pick up for a city tour through old Stone Town. A visit to the grocery and fish market will be made together with visits to the Anglican church, where Livingstone prayed and where his body was initially returned to after his death, the slave cellars, “the House of Wonders”, the Sultan’s Palace and the old Arabic fort. After the city tour transfer back to the hotel and afternoon at own leisure. Overnight in Swahili House, bed and breakfast
It
may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old
city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years.
It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand
Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance
of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the
brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different
examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just
wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.
Stone Town was recently and deservedly declared a World Heritage Site
by UNESCO. Most of the houses that can be seen today were built in the
19th century when Zanzibar was one of the most important trading centres
in the Indian Ocean region. The coralline rock of Zanzibar was a good
building material. Nice places to visit are: House of Wonders museum,
Arab Fort, Palace museum, the small streets of Stone Town, the fish and
vegetable market, the slave cellar. Also lovely to visit are the spice
gardens and bathhouses.
Just
30 minutes southwest of Zanzibar’s historic capital, Stone Town,
with its magnificent architecture and ancient culture, the Lodge
is concealed well away from the busy tourist areas, making it the
perfect venue for enjoying the peace and tranquility of this tropical
island paradise. Set in 40 acres of exquisite wilderness with three
naturally sheltered beaches, Fumba Beach Lodge has only 26 rooms
to ensure your privacy. The rooms are scattered throughout our extensive
grounds, shaded by a forest of magnificent baobab trees and whispering
palm fronds and cooled by gentle sea breezes. Our twenty deluxe rooms,
each with an en-suite bathroom, private terrace and stunning ocean
view, are spaciously suitable for families, couples or individuals.Day 11 - 13 Zanzibar, Fumba Beach Lodge
These days are at your own leisure so as to relax and enjoy the lovely beach and Fumba Beach Lodge with its activities after your exciting safari to the mainland’s amazing bush. Overnight in Fumba Beach Lodge deluxe room with sea view, half board.
Day 14 Zanzibar – Dar es Salaam
After breakfast check out and deposit your baggage in safe keeping at the storage room at reception then enjoy the last day by the Indian Ocean. In the afternoon transfer to Zanzibar Airport for the domestic flight to Dar- es- Salaam. Depending on departure time of international flight, after arrival in Dar es Salaam, transfer to Movenpick Hotel for dinner (dinner is at own account, luggage can be left in the vehicle with the driver whilst dining).
