branch of the Great Rift Valley, it has a pleasant climate and is close

National Park, and Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as having its own Arusha
National Park on Mount Meru. The region is a popular tourist destination
and is the centre of the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit. The Rift Valley
cuts through the middle of the region north-to-south; Oldonyo Lengai
(Mountain of God in Maasai language) is an active volcano to the north
of Ngorongoro. Altitudes throughout the region vary widely, but much
of it ranges from 900 to 1600 metres (3,000 to 5,500 feet in elevation.
Mt. Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro,
peaks at 4,655 metres (14,980 feet). The city of Arusha is at the southern
foot of Mt. Meru. Areas to the south and southeast of the mountain tend
to be sufficiently watered and are the most densely populated areas of
the region. Most people here speak Swahili and their tribal language.
Many also speak English. The Maasai are the most influential tribe in
the region. The Arusha and Meru people live near Mt. Meru. Rwa, Mbulu,

the slopes of the Great Rift Valley and next to Lake Manyara National
Park which is famously known for the tree climbing lions, Wild Africa
Manyara lodge is built on the exact spot featured in the John Wayne famous
Hatari movie. Beautiful and intimate the lodge setting has been designed
to match the traditional surroundings without compromising quality. The
lodge is outside the mto wa mbu escarpment with the best sunset view
over the great rift valley and directly facing the soda lake Manyara.
This lodge is centrally located to all the famous and well-known northern
national parks. The area is famous for all types of birds and animals
like giraffes, buffaloes, gazelles and much more which are often spotted
in the grounds of the lodge. Rooms are designed in
roundavels and set in traditional style that is uniquely African the
rooms are significantly larger than the normal standard rooms found in
similar tourist hotels and lodges, with medium beds and a balcony which

Manyara. There are 10 rooms in total of which some may be converted to
cater for four VIP suites or family accommodation, these rooms are tastefully
decorated with traditional design themes each with native art and furniture.
All rooms have private balconies with vistas of quiet, meticulously maintained
gardens.
Located beneath the cliffs of the
Manyara Escarpment, on the edge of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National
Park offers varied ecosystems, incredible bird life, and breathtaking
views. Located on the way to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, Lake
Manyara National Park is well worth a stop in its own right. Its ground
water forests, bush plains, baobob strewn cliffs, and algae-streaked
hot springs offer incredible ecological variety in a small area, rich
in wildlife and incredible numbers of birds. The alkaline soda of Lake
Manyara is home to an incredible array of bird life that thrives on its
brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoop and graze by the thousands, colourful
specks against the grey minerals of the lake shore. Yellow-billed storks
swoop and corkscrew on thermal winds rising up from the escarpment, and
herons flap their wings against the sun-drenched sky. Even reluctant
bird-watchers will find something to watch and marvel at within the national
park. Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions are another reason to
pay this park a visit. The only kind of their species in the world, they
make the ancient mahogany and elegant acacias their home during the rainy
season, and are a well-known but rather rare feature of the northern
park. In addition to the lions, the national park is also home to the
largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world; a fact that makes
for interesting game viewing of large families of the primates.Day 4: Lake Manyara to Serengeti National Park

the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Over 90,000 tourists visit
the Park each year. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves
have been established within the 30,000 km² region. It's unique ecosystem
has inspired writers from Ernest Hemingway to Peter Mattheissen, filmmakers
like Hugo von Lawick and Alan Root as well as numerous photographers
and scientists. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth.
The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed
in the past million years. Early man himself made an appearance in Olduvai
Gorge about two million years ago. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation
and migration are as old as the hills themselves. It is the migration
for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest
and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern
plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl
west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. So strong
is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested
river can hold them back. The Wildebeest travel through a variety of
parks, reserves and protected areas and through a variety of habitat.
Join us to explore the different forms of vegetation and landscapes of
the Serengeti ecosystem and meet some of their most fascinating inhabitants.

and the other covers to the Serengeti. The purpose of this arrangement
is a balance between the needs of the natural inhabitants of this area

herds that the hats and the predators in this area. The Masai formerly

Day after day of cloudless skies.
The fierce sun sucks the moisture from the landscape, baking the earth
a dusty red, the withered grass as brittle as straw. The Tarangire River
has shrivelled to a shadow of its wet season self. But it is choked with
wildlife. Thirsty nomads have wandered hundreds of parched kilometres
knowing that here, always, there is water. Herds of up to 300 elephants
scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest,
zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking
lagoons. It's the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti
ecosystem - a smorgasbord for predators – and the one place in Tanzania
where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and
peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed. During the rainy
season, the seasonal visitors scatter over a 20,000 sq km (12,500 sq
miles) range until they exhaust the green plains and the river calls
once more. But Tarangire's mobs of elephant are easily encountered, wet
or dry. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird
varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world.
On drier ground you find the Kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird;
the stocking-thighed ostrich, the world's largest bird; and small parties
of ground hornbills blustering like turkeys. More ardent bird-lovers
might keep an eye open for screeching flocks of the dazzlingly colourful
yellow-collared lovebird, and the somewhat drabber rufous-tailed weaver
and ashy starling – all endemic to the dry savannah of north-central
Tanzania. Disused termite mounds are often frequented by colonies of
the endearing dwarf mongoose, and pairs of red-and-yellow barbet, which
draw attention to themselves by their loud, clockwork-like duetting.
Tarangire's pythons climb trees, as do its lions and leopards, lounging
in the branches where the fruit of the sausage tree disguises the twitch
of a tail.Day 12: Tarangire to Arusha
